She’s going to kill me, but I just couldn’t resist posting this photo. The other day Grams was going through the California Digital Library (through the UC) looking at old newspapers. Big Guy said, “Put your name in and see what comes up.” “There’ll probably be some letters to the editor that I wrote a long time ago, that’ll be boring,” she shrugged.
Well, surprise, surprise, the letters to the editor were there, but there was also this little gem from (how can I say this in a diplomatic way?) a while ago (in a land far, far away).
Grams was 11 years old and away at summer camp. The newspaper came to take pictures. “Look at that! We’re supposed to be roasting wieners, but there’s no fire!” she laughed. I asked her if she remembered the picture. “Oh sure! I can remember the moment it was taken. That was my 2nd year at that camp. I used to have a copy of that picture, but it been lost long ago.”
“What do you remember most about camp?” I asked. “The orange juice and the peanut butter. They both tasted like the tins they came in. I hated them!” she laughed. “I made a key chain with some plastic stuff that I braided. It was hot,” she sighed, “it was any awfully long time ago, Gweeds. Well, those were my 15 seconds” "Seconds? I thought it was it was minutes." She laughed, "in my case it was seconds."
I took the liberty of drawing a circle around Grams. She had a great set of gams, even back then. She’s still all legs. Of course the rest is a little lower than it used to be. She says that’s gravity. I say, she's a force of nature.
Please give what you can to Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders).
And, of course
Good Riddance
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
