The best part of being in Wales is just being in Wales. Walking the doggers can be both invigorating and relaxing. The little walkways sometimes go between properties and sometimes go along the old Welsh Highland train line. The tracks have been taken up, but there are signs posted by every ‘kissing gate’ that tell you about the old rail line.
The kissing gates are stiles that allow one person at a time to go through. I suppose that lovers would part at these gates: hence Kissing Gates. There is always something to see along the way. Fresh berries and apples (and crab apples) are everywhere. Then there are, of course, sheep and cattle, and also birds and poultry.
The wind is almost always blowing. The sky can change from gray to blue and then back to gray again in the matter of a few minutes. From the footpaths you can see across the Irish Sea. That’s were the weather comes from in Wales. On a clear day you can see the coastline of Ireland, but clear days are few and far between. The sky is almost always a moving picture of beautiful and threatening clouds; and the wind, the omnipresent wind, is there to let you know that this is no ordinary land. This is the one and only Wales: unconquered and untamed.
